  Headwaters Forestry Cooperative
Long Prairie, Minnesota

Our Focus: To improve the conditions of our local forests, our local community and our local watersheds. We cut the worst and leave the best, improving the genetic base of our forest. We use the poor quality logs for flooring and paneling. This concept is a complete reversal of the mismanagement that has been practiced in our area for the past 100 years. The forest is more productive and is of higher quality after a selective harvest than before harvest.

Landowner Members: Thirty members with 2750 acres of forest land. Eight of these have FSC certified management plans.

Member Highlight

Harlan and Joan Faust learn about adding value to their trees in a way few others have. The Fausts know that the 55-acre wood lot that they've owned 26 years needed to be managed well if was going to produce trees that continue to provide high quality raw material. So they used timber stand improvement to get wood to build into their own house.

Area: Our area is of mixed hardwoods between prairies and the pine forest in central Minnesota. All of our land area contributes to the upper Mississippi river watershed, hence our name "Headwaters." Most of our forests are growing on gently sloping to moderately steep glacial till material. Average annual precipitation is 27 inches.
